Review COP 17

Today marks exactly eight days since the opening and launch of COP 17 which opened on the 28th November 2011, where both the President of South Africa Jacob Zuma and Minister of International Affairs and COP president Ms Maite Nkoane Mashabane welcomed more than 1000 delegates from the world at the ICC arena inDurban.

The Minister of water and Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa and other government officials including Naledi Pandor the Minister of Science And Technology, had a media briefing on Thursday evening the 2nd December 2011 at the Baobab Lounge, ICC.

Minister Edna Molewa Spoke about a new policy called the Long Term Mitigation Scenario which includes five different sectors including Science and Technology, Energy, Transport as well as job Creation just to name a few. This policy is to be evaluated every five years. With all this she proudly ended her speech by saying that “South Africais confidently moving to a greener economy.”

But with all the different activities and briefings of COP 17 there was one particular event that stood out, the March on Saturday the 3rd December 2011, were about 300 organisations got together for a Protest on West Street against Climate Change, demanding that South Africa make the right decision on during the world Conference.

The march was a fantastic experience to see the youth and a big group of women getting together amongst other groups from all over the world fighting for what they know is right was just a great and an unforgettable view.
